Welcome to Leading Better Care

Leading Better Care - Delivering excellence in care

Developing Myself

Effective leadership must begin with self-awareness - understanding your own capacity, capability, values and motivations. This is the basis for ensuring you are appropriately equipped and prepared to make sense of a complex clinical environment.

This places the responsibility on you as leaders to provide a strategic vision for the teams with whom you work, build appropriate collaborations and create an environment that motivates staff and promotes creativity and innovation.

How can Leading Better Care help?

This website provides a locus for a wide range of learning opportunities, resources and ways of connecting with others. Frameworks are provided that help to clarify priorities of your role, consider your leadership preferences, strengths and development areas. A useful place to start is therefore the opportunity for you to review your needs.

Developing the Service

Leading within a complex workplace requires the ability to inspire your team to deliver safe, effective, person-centred care which supports the delivery of positive outcomes that reflect the needs of service users, the organisational objectives and policy priorities.

In an ideal world these would be clearly aligned however they can sometimes appear to conflict or contradict. The role and development framework developed under Leading Better Care, within the context of policy priorities, offers some clarity for senior clinical nursing and midwifery leaders.

This requires leaders to ensure that their focus remains on safe and effective care, that continuously strives to improve the patient experience.

This is achieved through ensuring high performance teams, that reflect an awareness of professional requirements and organisational and strategic priorities.

A useful place to start may therefore be to consider the role framework and priorities this outlines within the context of your profession which underpin what is expected of an excellent nursing and midwifery service.

Development Resources

There are a wealth of online resources that can provide insights into effective leadership and provide ideas, evidence or exercises on how to motivate and get the best from your teams. However this can be a time consuming exercise.

This website brings together a developing repository of resources for individual, team and organisational development. These include generic leadership knowledge, resources mapped to leadership capabilities and service priorities, frameworks and lessons from other health boards and service providers.

In addition to this, there will be access to more formal opportunities and events to support leadership development. Development undertaken through accessing and learning from these resources can then be used as supporting evidence of ongoing professional development and contribute to NMC Revalidation.

To support the ongoing focus on excellence in care in NHS Scotland, coaching was introduced for emerging leaders across health boards in Autumn 2016. The approach and development partnership built on the successful delivery of leadership coaching to emerging leaders in Midwifery (Best Start Leadership Programme, delivered by Firefly 2012-2016). This paper provides highlights of the participant experience, learning and impact, with suggestions for potential improvements raised in feedback.
